The 2023 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne (Duc de Magenta) is medium to full-bodied, satiny and saline, with more cut and energy than the Maison bottling.
Cask sample. Lightly dusty citrus. Stony grapefruit rather than ripe lemon. Taut, fresh, grainy and a bit lean for this quality level even with the creamy aftertaste. (JH)
The 2023 Puligny-Montrachet Clos de la Garenne 1er Cru contains just a soupçon more exoticism on the nose, with apricot and passion fruit joining citrus peel aromas. A little Chassagne-like in style, this has a well-balanced palate with a slightly honeyed entry, but it is slightly lower pH than the La Garenne, giving it more tension and bite on the finish. Drink over the next 12 to 15 years.
An even more floral nose freely offers up its combination of citrus confit, poached pear, crushed anise and an admirably deft application of wood. The delicious medium weight flavors possess a highly refined texture along with a subtle minerality that adds to the impression of vibrancy on the lingering finish that is also supported by lemon-tinged acidity. This is another among the wines that should be reasonably approachable after only 3 to 5 years of keeping.
