Robert Parker (90)

They 2016 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc escaped hail damage (for a change!). It has an attractive bouquet, quite floral in style with yellow flowers, orange zest and a touch of lemon peel. I like the energy here. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed texture, a fine thread of acidity, quite dense and rich on the finish that caresses the mouth. I would like just a little more mineralité to show through by the time of bottling, and if so, it will merit a higher score. There is certainly potential here.

Right on the border with Pommard. This wine is from a 7-hectare plot of chardonnay within this climat. There’s a spiced hazelnut edge across an array of white peaches and citrus fruits. It has a strong core structure with fleshy surrounds. Long, dense and smooth.

Cask sample. 16 months in oak. Better than they feared in terms of frost. 7 ha of Chardonnay as a patchwork in the Clos des Mouches vineyard. Lots of different clones. The structure of Corton combined with elegance of Puligny, suggests Véronique Drouhin. Geology varies significantly between the top and bottom of the vineyard.
Seductive, ripe fruit with a touch of orange in the citrus, almost pineapple but not that tropical. Rich and mouth-filling and still fresh. So satisfying and utterly moreish. (JH)
