Very deep, dense and meaty, but somehow this wine from ancient vines has a light touch and moves over the full-bodied palate on tiptoe. Superfine tannins, seamless harmony and an impression of weightlessness. I love the dark floral aromas that make this a bewitching full-bodied red. Very limited production from cinsault vines planted in 1928.

The 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape F601 was bottled a little earlier than usual to accentuate its floral aspects. Vivid jasmine, orange blossom and rosewater jump out of the glass, neatly intertwined with black cherry, herbal nuances and a pinch of cocoa powder. Balancing the 14.8% alcohol with uplifting freshness, the 2023 is slightly less powerful compared to the preceding vintage, but that doesn’t matter at all. Sourced from vines planted in 1928, it’s a singular, spherical Cinsaut that plays in a league of its own. As usual, the 2023 used 100% whole clusters in fermentation and aged entirely in amphorae. Annual production is only about 50 cases.

All Cinsault from the Les Serres lieu-dit, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape F601 reveals a deep ruby hue as well as an incredibly Burgundian vibe in its medium to full-bodied, seamless profile. Ripe black cherries, spring flowers, peppery garrigue, and forest floor notes all shine here, and this beauty is seamless on the palate, with fine tannins, just about flawless balance, and a great finish. This might actually be the finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted, and while I've always thought it lagged the more Grenache-dominated cuvées, that's certainly not the case in 2023. This is beautiful.
