Jean Grivot
Domaine Jean Grivot is a family estate that ranks among the greatest names in Burgundy. The family originally came from the Jura region but settled in Vosne-Romanée around 1780, shortly before the French Revolution.
Jean Grivot, whose name still appears on the labels today, took over the domaine from his father in 1955. In 1959, he introduced a major innovation: all wines were henceforth bottled entirely at the estate, a rare practice at the time. In the decades that followed, the domaine built an outstanding reputation, both for the quality of its wines and for the purity and transparency with which each terroir is expressed.
From 1987, Jean’s son Étienne, together with his wife Marielle (sister of Patrick Bize), assumed full responsibility for both the vineyards and the cellar. Since 2017, their daughter Mathilde Grivot has been at the helm of the estate, continuing the family’s long-standing traditions with great respect while introducing a fresh and contemporary vision.
The Grivot family owns 15.5 hectares of vineyards, spread across 22 appellations in the communes of Vosne-Romanée, Vougeot, Chambolle-Musigny and Nuits-Saint-Georges. The most prestigious holdings include the Grand Crus:
• Richebourg Grand Cru (0.32 ha)
• Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru (1.86 ha)
• Échézeaux Grand Cru (0.85 ha)
The domaine also holds parcels in the highly sought-after Premier Crus Vosne-Romanée “Les Suchots” (0.22 ha) and “Les Brûlées” (0.26 ha).
As early as 1978, Étienne convinced his father to abandon chemical fertilisers. Today only minimal organic compost is used. Although not certified organic, the vineyards are cultivated according to organic principles, and even the horse Pirate is employed to plough the Grand Cru plots in order to preserve soil structure.
A strict selection of grapes, both during harvesting and on the sorting table, ensures that only perfectly ripe fruit is used. The grapes are 100% destemmed, followed by a short cold soak. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts.
The wines are aged for 15 months in oak barrels, mainly sourced from the forests of Allier and Nièvre. Depending on the vintage and appellation, between 20% and 80% new oak is used; for the Grand Crus this often reaches around 70%, providing additional depth and structure. After approximately 18 months, the wines are bottled without fining and, since 1988, without filtration.
Domaine Jean Grivot’s wines are internationally acclaimed for their terroir expression, personality, intensity and exceptional ageing potential. At the annual tastings of the Institute of Masters of Wine in London, they consistently rank among the very best.
Since 2005, the wines have become even more refined, expressive and profound. Year after year, the estate proves its ability to craft wines that stand shoulder to shoulder with the absolute elite of Burgundy, making Domaine Jean Grivot one of the most respected and consistent producers in Vosne-Romanée.
