Château Margaux 2014 is the Grand Vin of the estate in the village of Margaux; it is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led Médoc red wine produced from grapes grown at this First Growth property. In 2014, spring across the Bordeaux region was warm and sunny, but summer was cloudy with heavy rain, and by September, the sunshine returned. The growing season in Margaux was slightly more humid than in the northern regions of Saint-Julien and Pauillac, but the hot, dry Indian summer that followed did the work.
This late-arriving sunshine is extremely important here. Thanks to it, Cabernet Sauvignon achieved the necessary level of ripeness in this gravelly soil, and the wine possesses the firm yet delicate tannins that this winery prides itself on, rather than feeling heavy or coarse. Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc complement this profile.
Selection is the other half of this story. Only about 36% of the harvest is used for Grand Vin; the rest is either transferred to Pavillon Rouge or excluded from the blend entirely. It is then aged for an average of 21 months in new French oak barrels (small casks made in France).
This is a wine that will shows its best for a long time. It is best enjoyed through 2050.
