Tasting Note Chateau Gloria 2008

The aroma is dominated by black currant and plum, with nuances of Dark and cedar, as well as a subtle hint of sweet spice derived from the oak barrels. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. The tannins are well-integrated, supporting a firm structure without irritating the throat. The finish is exceptionally long, lingering well after the fruit notes have faded. While it can be enjoyed now, it also possesses sufficient structure to withstand further aging.

Grape Varieties

Cabernet Sauvignon forms the backbone of the 2008 vintage Chateau Gloria: a framework of cassis, cedar, and tannins. Merlot adds plum and roundness to the palate. Blend:

Cellaring Potential

Best enjoyed by 2034. Matured tannins and a long finish support the wine. For the 2008 vintage of Chateau Gloria, decant for about an hour before serving at 16-18 °C.

About Chateau Gloria

Most Saint-Julien vineyards rank among the 11 Grands Crus Classés of the appellation, classified back in 1855, which makes Château Gloria an exception. Henri Martin negotiated with friends who owned vineyards in Saint-Julien, purchased the well-located Günzian gravel terroir, and painstakingly built this vineyard from the ground up, one plot at a time.

Today, the vineyard spans 50 hectares, much of which is cru classé land, and some of which once belonged to the commune's most famous châteaux. However, Gloria itself was not classified, for a simple reason: In 1855, this vineyard did not yet exist.

The vineyard's varietal composition follows the classic Left Bank style, consisting of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Petit Verdot. The harvest is done by hand. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 14 months of aging in casks, 40% of which are new.

Terroir & Climate

Glacial gravel is well-suited to Cabernet Sauvignon because it retains heat and allows water to drain quickly. Saint-Julien is located in Gironde, which lies between Margaux and Pauillac, and Chateau Gloria's's wine occupies an intermediate position between them. In other words, it is structured yet supple.

Winemaking

The grapes are hand-harvested. To preserve the purity of the fruit flavors, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by 14 months of aging in barrels, 45% of which are new. The oak adds just enough spicy nuance without overshadowing the character of Saint-Julien.

Food Pairing

Since tannins require fat and protein, red meats pair exceptionally well with these wines.

• Rack: Lamb with rosemary
• A Bordelaise-style adaptation of Entrecôte: Shallots enhance the wine's spicy nuances
• Wild: Wild boar ragout with cranberries. Earthy flavors emerge against a backdrop of cedar notes
• Dark: Chocolate with 85% or more cocoa content. At first glance, this may seem like an unexpected pairing, but it actually creates an exquisite contrast
