Domaine Jean Grivot
Domaine Jean Grivot became one of the first Burgundy domaines to bottle and sell their own wines (in the 1930’s) and only from their own vineyards.
The family is originally from the Jura region, but moved to Vosne – Romanée around 1780 (just before the French Revolution). Jean Grivot, whose name is still mentioned on the labels, acquired the domaine from his father in 1955 and since 1987 his son Etienne has full responsibility of its vineyards and the cellar. (assisted by his wife Marielle)
Only a very small amount of organic fertilizer is used. The wines are matured in oak barrels, mainly from the Allier and Nievre forest. Depending on the vintage and the appellation they use up to 70% new oak (only for the top grands crus).
A severe grape selection in the vineyard by the pickers and again on the sorting table guarantees only perfectly healthy and ripe grapes are used to make the various wines. Both a tractor and a horse are put in to plough the various lands, depending on the accessibility of the vines in the vineyard. The wines are praised for their terroir, personality, intensity and longevity and they got very good reviews from the international wine critics.
The most important vineyards are: Richebourg Grand Cru (0.32 Ha), Clos de Vougeot Grand Crus (1.86 Ha), Echézeaux Grand Cru (0.85 Ha) and the Vosne-Romanée 1er Crus “Les Suchots” (0.22 Ha) and “Les Brulées” (0.26 Ha).
