Showing beautifully, the 2009 Cote Rotie La Landonne offers aromas of tapenade, bouquet garni, asphalt, blackberries, cassis, roasted meats and additional black fruits. More evolved and softer than the 2010, with a long, full-bodied finish, it can be drunk now and over the next 10-15 years.
Rene Rostaing’s elegant style is well-displayed in both 2010 and the riper, more fleshy, exuberant 2009 vintage. Always the sexiest wine in Rostaing’s cellar is the Cote Rotie Cote Blonde. It includes 3-4% co-fermented Viognier and is always the most seamless wine resembling haute couture.
This has depth and ripeness, but stays defined, with an almost searing iron spine cutting through the core of plum, blackberry and currant fruit. The long finish lets bay leaf, tobacco and chestnut notes fill in. Showing great drive and intensity, this is still very youthful now and will benefit from extended cellaring.
Tasted blind. Mid ruby. Pale rim. Sweet and very ripe on the nose. Then dry and a bit dusty on the finish. Not quite enough to hold it all together in the middle. I wonder whether it will ever take on quite enough flesh to deliver gorgeousness? But it is juicy and fun – almost ready. (JR)
Dark ruby garnet with purple reflections and a broad watery edge. Black forest berries, some nougat and fine earthy savoury notes on the nose. A complex palate has nuances of ripe blackberries, with taut tannins and a mineral freshness to the finish. Red berries dominate the aftertaste and it all seems a bit restrained, with only medium length at the moment.
