The 2022 Santenay 1er Cru Gravières Rouge has turned out beautifully, unwinding in the glass with notes of dark berries, sweet spices, baking chocolate and violets. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's deep and multidimensional, its perfumed core of fruit underpinned by an elegantly muscular chassis of sweet, powdery tannins. It's produced from a handful of parcels in Les Gravières, including both old vines and also younger plantings at high density with superior Pinot Noir genetics, farmed with high, unhedged canopies and soil work performed by small caterpillar-tracked engines. This is the most structured wine in the range and will richly reward at least five years' patience.
Dark purple, almost black in the middle. The Gravières includes the domaine’s best massal selection. This is absolutely massive, almost black strap, does not taste over alcoholic but the power is definitely part of it. A very dark fruit, perhaps a very slight fruit oxidation which will be temporary, with firm tannins. I think this will all settle down but it is definitely for the long term. Not for the faint hearted.
