Poggio di Sotto
Poggio di Sotto can be found in the enchanting countryside of Tuscany. The estate is located in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, just southeast of Montalcino. The winery was established in 1989 and has been one of the top wineries in Tuscany ever since. The estate covers 44 hectares, of which 16 hectares are planted with vines and 4 hectares with olive trees.
The vineyards are planted between 200 and 400 metres altitude. The extinct volcano Amiata, the Orcia river and the sea breeze create unique conditions here. The poor, rocky soil consists mainly of limestone and clay. Together, it forms an excellent terroir for sangiovese. Vineyard maintenance is carried out as naturally as possible. Therefore, no chemical pesticides are used. For several years, the winery has had an official certificate for organic viticulture.
Poggio di Sotto produces three different wines, two of which are Brunello di Montalcino and one Rosso di Montalcino. After the manual harvest, the bunches are again selected for quality so that only the best grapes are used. This ensures that the final yield per hectare is very low. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels using indigenous yeast cultures. Once fermentation is complete, the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva matures for 45 months, the Brunello di Montalcino for 30 months and the Rosso di Montalcino for 22 months. Slavonian oak is used for maturation. After wood aging, the wines are bottled and undergo several more months of bottle aging before release. The three cuvées of Poggio di Sotto are of sublime quality and among the best in the region.
The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is Poggio di Sotto's top-rated vintage. This vintage was awarded 100 Parker points! Other good vintages include 2017 and 2018.
