Tenuta Silvio Nardi

Montalcino is full of wineries that claim their hillsides are the best. Tenuta Silvio Nardi, on the other hand, takes a different approach. Its stated goal is not to blend all wines into a single house style, but rather to ensure that each wine truly reflects the characteristics of its specific vineyard. Given that the soil and elevation vary from slope to slope here, this is a rather practical way of thinking.

The only grape used here is Sangiovese, and this is the very foundation of Montalcino. Brunello di Montalcino is the name that comes to mind first for most people when they think of this winery, and it is released in the full-bodied, oak-aged style for which this appellation is famous.

A fun fact worth noting: on the winery's own website, this name is written in the plural form, Tenute Silvio Nardi.

Sangiovese

Both of this winery's Montalcino red wines are made from a single grape variety, and the difference between the two stems not from a blend of varieties but from differences in the vineyards and winemaking processes.

  • Brunello di Montalcino: 100% Sangiovese
  • Rosso di Montalcino: Also 100% Sangiovese, in a lighter, medium-bodied style

As is common with Montalcino wines, the alcohol content tends to be on the higher side; Brunello is around 14.5%, and Rosso is close to 14%.

Two Montalcino reds

Brunello di Montalcino is Tenuta Silvio Nardi's flagship wine. It is a full-bodied red wine aged in oak barrels and sealed with a cork, made, as is typical of Brunello wines, with long-term aging in mind.

Next to it is Rosso di Montalcino. Although it uses the same grape variety produced in the same village, it is a lighter wine that is best enjoyed sooner. It is closer to medium-bodied than full-bodied. It's a great wine to open and enjoy while Brunello is still aging.

Visitors can book wine-tasting experiences at this winery, and there is also a wine club for those who wish to receive regular wine deliveries.
