The 2023 Volnay Les Santenots 1er Cru comes from a parcel where Girardin manages the vineyard themselves. This vintage includes 30% whole bunch. It offers a finely delineated mixture of redcurrant, wild strawberry and slightly darker fruit tones compared to the Les Pitures. Light incense aromas develop in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a succulent opening, displaying more precision and focus than the Pitures. It has admirable tension toward the finish with just a little heat on the aftertaste, but it's very minor. There's good potential here.
A suggestion of herbal tea sits atop the notably ripe and overtly floral aromas of mostly various red berries. The super-sleek, if not particularly concentrated, flavors are also supported by notably fine-grained tannins on the balanced, youthfully austere and firm finish that, like several wines in the range, would benefit from developing better complexity.
Purchased as grapes from a vineyard which the Girardin team manage. A richer purple, and clearly very ripe grapes. First picked among the reds. A certain juiciness across the palate, almost a little angular behind.
