Chateau La Fleur Petrus

Many wineries in the Pomerol region are named after local place names. Château La Fleur Petrus takes its name from two place names because the winery's vineyards span both the Pétrus and Lafleur vineyards, located on the Pomerol Plateau. This vineyard is one of the better-known names in the appellation, and it was the first vineyard purchased by Jean-Pierre Moueix, a wine merchant from Libourne, for his own use.

Merlot dominates the vineyard, supported by small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The ratio of gravel to clay determines the character of this wine. The gravel-rich plots yield elegant flavors, while the clay-rich plots offer a full-bodied character and a firm texture. Blending these two elements is the key to this estate's wines.

Moueix's first purchase in Pomerol

The name of this estate dates back to the 18th century; because it was located between the Pétrus and LaFleur vineyards at that time, it acquired a dual name that is still used today.

Jean-Pierre Moueix settled in Libourne in 1937 and sold Right Bank wine at that time, before Pomerol became the well-known location it is today. He recognized early on that this appellation was far superior to its reputation and purchased Château La Fleur-Pétrus in 1950. This was the first vineyard he acquired, and three years later, in 1953, he added Château Trotanoy to his holdings.

The estate remains family-owned, and when journalists visit for tastings, the name that represents the estate's new vintages is none other than Christian Moueix.

Eighteen hectares on the plateau

Château La Fleur-Pétrus covers an area of 18.7 hectares, all of which is located on the Pomerol Plateau. There are no slopes, low-lying areas, or plots incorporated from other regions.

The elevation ranges from 33 to 38 meters above sea level. In most wine regions, a difference of this magnitude would hardly be considered a noteworthy detail. However, on the flat Pomerol Plateau, where the difference between one plot and the next is measured in mere meters and variations in soil, this is precisely one of the factors that distinguishes neighboring wineries.

And it is precisely these subtle differences that define the identity of this vineyard. Since each plot is situated at a slightly different elevation and has a subtly different soil composition, the wine is made not from a single, uniform block, but from a combination of countless small pieces.

Gravel one side, clay the other

The Château La Fleur-Pétrus vineyard features two soil types: gravel and deep clay. Both of these soils rest atop iron-rich subsoil, which is the same type of iron-bearing layer found in the most well-known areas of Pomerol.

In the predominantly gravel areas, the wines tend to have a delicate, light structure. In the predominantly clay areas, the wines are velvety smooth, dense, and have a firm structure. The winery's signature style cannot be defined by just one of these styles.

This is precisely what makes it so intriguing. Rather than favoring a specific soil type, the winery focuses on the combination of the two soils themselves, blending the elegance of the gravel vineyards with the richness and firm structure of the clay vineyards. This is the secret behind the estate's ability to deliver both sophisticated and rich flavors without leaning too heavily in either direction.

The grape varieties

The planting status of Château La Fleur-Pétrus is as follows:

Merlot plays a distinct role, adding softness and richness to the wine. Cabernet Franc is planted in gravel and fine clay soil, giving the wine a firm structure and even greater complexity. Petit Verdot is planted in fine gravel soil and imparts a subtle hint of spice at the very end of the finish.

The winemaking

Everything at Château La Fleur-Pétrus revolves around the uniqueness of each vineyard. The subtle differences in soil and elevation across each vineyard are treated as valuable information worth distinguishing separately, rather than simply being standardized; the character of the final wine is determined by how harmoniously these elements come together.

When harvesting, the grapes are hand-picked, with a double sort, first manual then optical (since 2009 across the top Moueix properties).

Fermentation is done in a traditional way, in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete vats. Macerations and extractions are gentle and controlled. The concrete is typical of Pomerol; the steel vats are doubled up to allow more precise parcel-by-parcel vinification.

Ageing is done 16 to 18 months in oak barriques, 50% new.

The wine

Only one wine is produced: Chateau La Fleur-Pétrus.

There is no second wine.

Jean-Pierre Moueix has many other Pomerol estates, each bottled under its own name like Trotanoy, Hosanna, Latour à Pomerol, Lagrange à Pomerol, Lafleur-Gazin, plus Belair-Monange in Saint-Émilion.

Frequently asked questions

Is Château La Fleur-Pétrus the same as Château Lafleur?

No. Both are Pomerol estates with confusingly similar names, but they are separate properties under separate ownership. La Fleur-Pétrus belongs to the Moueix house in Libourne; Lafleur is run by the Guinaudeau family.

Why does the name mention Pétrus?

Because of geography, not branding. The vineyard's parcels lie across the localities historically called Pétrus and La Fleur, and the estate was named for that position in the 18th century.

Does the blend in the bottle match the plantings?

Not exactly. The planted proportions are the starting point, but the final assemblage changes with the vintage, and in some years one of the minor varieties does not make the cut.

Where is the estate based?

Château La Fleur-Pétrus sits on the Pomerol plateau, with the Moueix family firm operating out of Libourne.
