The 2014 growing season in Tuscany was cool and rainy, making this vintage one of the most challenging in the past 10 years. At the Petrolo winery, located in Valdarno di Sopra between Florence and Arezzo, the elevation and the forests, which usually lend the wine its freshness, forced them to carefully select the grapes and postpone the harvest that year. Compared to the warmer years that preceded and followed it, the 2014 “Galatrona”, made from 100% Merlot, t urned out to be more restrained and rich in flavor.
The polish and fine texture to this 2014 is impressive with blueberry, dark chocolate and light walnut aromas and flavors. Medium body, integrated tannins and a long, refined finish. Serious sense for the vintage.
First impressions include dark plum and damson, while the overall aroma features light notes of graphite, tobacco leaf, and dried herbs. The richness characteristic of Merlot is clearly present, but it comes across as restrained against the backdrop of a more austere and cooler structure than usual. On the palate, the tannins are fine and well-balanced, and the acidity clearly stands out compared to other Merlot wines produced in this corner of Tuscany. The finish is long and rich. The wine is wonderful to drink right now, but it really comes into its own when paired with food.
Galatrona is a pure Merlot from a vineyard first planted by Luca Sanjust in 1990. The blend is 100% Merlot.
In a cool vintage such as 2014, the elevation in Valdarno di Sopra (250–500 meters) and the soil, composed of marl, sandstone, and shale, prevent the Merlot from developing a jammy flavor. The wine has a velvety smoothness, yet a solid structure can be felt beneath it. Comparisons to Pomerol are often made, and 2014 is precisely the vintage for which this comparison is entirely appropriate.
The optimal drinking window is from now until approximately 2030. By Galatrona's standards, 2014 is not considered a vintage suitable for long-term aging; however, thanks to its fresh acidity and dense tannins, the wine remains in good condition and still has potential for further maturation. Store in a dark place at a temperature of 12–14 °C in a horizontal position. As the fruity notes mellow, you can expect the aromas of roasted and tobacco nuances to deepen.
Petrolo is located in a quiet corner of Tuscany, Valdarno di Sopra, between Florence, Arezzo, and Siena. This region is little known to most wine lovers. The winery has been owned by the Bazzocchi family since the 1940s, but the modern “Petrolo” came into being when management was taken over by former artist Luca Sanjust, who replanted the vineyards. In 1990, he planted the first Merlot vineyard, and in the second half of 1994, almost by accident, the first “Galatrona” wine was produced. Our website continues to feature this winery because there is no other producer in Tuscany that creates such a unique Merlot.
The vineyards are located at an elevation of 250 to 500 meters above sea level, which is a significant altitude for Tuscan Merlot. And it is precisely this elevation that is a key factor for “Galatrona.” Cool nights slow ripening, preserve acidity, and retain aromatic compounds that are lost at lower altitudes. The soil consists of marl, sandstone, and shale; it is well-drained and rich in minerals. The dense forest surrounding the vineyard further lowers the air temperature. As a result, even under conditions where heat and heaviness are typically expected, the wine acquires freshness and structure.
Organic farming methods are used: there is no irrigation or plowing, and the natural grass cover is preserved throughout the entire area. Yields are intentionally kept low, around 20–25 hectoliters per hectare, which allows for a higher concentration of fruit notes without excessive extraction. “Galatrona” is aged in French oak barriques (small 225-liter barrels), but the proportion of new barrels is kept to a minimum, so the oak aroma does not dominate the wine. On the palate, you can taste the fruit, the characteristics of the soil, and the elevation above sea level. The work in the cellar is focused on highlighting the vineyard’s individuality, not altering it.
“Galatrona” has delicate tannins and a deep flavor that complements the taste of red meat without overpowering it. Here are a few recommended pairings:
Serve at 18–20 °C. Young wine should be decanted at least one hour before serving.
