Aromas of pear, orange oil, dried white flowers, fresh pastry and bread dough introduce the 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru La Romanée, a medium to full-bodied, ample and enveloping wine that's satiny and seamless, with a layered core of fruit girdled by racy acids. Vibrant and precise, it concludes with a long, chalky finish.

Fresh with the palest of green tints. An energetic drive to the nose, fresh apples with considerable volume behind them. Perfectly balanced, poise and drive, a saline and citrus backbone, minerals are thrilling. The nose closes down for a while, but the wine continues to thrill on the palate. Definitely a keeper. In retrospect, knowing now what the wines are, I should probably have swapped the scores for this wine with the Grandes Ruchottes but on the day they exuberance of the latter seduced me more than the perfect poise of La Romanée.
