Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is an estate situated on the Left Bank of the Bordeaux area, in the appellation Saint-Julien. The wine has been classified as a 2nd Growth (Deuxième Grand Cru Classé) in the “Official Bordeaux Classification of 1855”.

The land was already mentioned in documents from the 13th century and the name “Beau Cailloux” was derived from the “beautiful and large stones” found in the soil. Bertrand Ducru purchased the vineyards in 1795 and added his name to the estate. He then hired Paul Abadie, who was a well-known architect from Paris, to build the beautiful château on the estate.

In 1878 at Ducru-Beaucaillou, the mildew problem, which so many Bordeaux vineyards suffered from, was more or less solved by creating a blend of lime milk and copper sulfate, known as “Bordeaux Soup”. Wine makers all over the world thankfully used this “Bordeaux Soup” to cure their vineyards from the mildew disease.

Through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the château faced challenges with economic downturns, and the first and start of the second world war. By 1940, as Europe stood on the brink of upheaval, Ducru-Beaucaillou remained a symbol of resilience and endured.

An important chapter in the winery’s history began in 1941, when the estate was acquired by the Borie family; however, their influence truly came to the fore in the second half of the 20th century. Under the leadership of Jean-Eugène Borie, and later his son Bruno Borie, Ducru-Beaucaillou succeeded in blending tradition and innovation. By the 1970s and 1980s, detailed vineyard management and careful selection had raised quality to a new level. Ducru-Beaucaillou preserved its traditions while embracing innovation. In the 1970s and 1980s, thanks to meticulous vineyard management and rigorous selection, the quality of the wines rose to a whole new level.

The modernisation process continued as a new cellar was built on the estate and winemaking techniques were refined, whilst maintaining a harmonious relationship with the terroir. The estate’s hallmark, Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines combining structure, elegance and ageing potential, has remained unchanged.

With the start of the 21st century, a golden age began for Ducru-Beaucaillou. Investments in precise viticultural practices and sustainable development ensure that the estate will be able to maintain its exceptional quality even in the face of climate change. The widely acclaimed wines of this vintage have captured the world’s attention, confirming that the status of ‘Second Growth’ is more than just a historical title.

Today, the estate is both a guardian of tradition and a pioneer of innovation. From its post-war revival to international renown, the journey undertaken by Ducru-Beaucaillou since 1945 is a story of resilience, continuity and understated excellence, which continues to be passed down from generation to generation alongside each year’s wines.

The grapes, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon (70% of the vines) with a about 30% Merlot, is harvested by hand and carefully sorted. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing the harvest from each vineyard plot to be vinified separately, preserving its specific terroir.

Extraction is carried out gently, with the aim of revealing the colour, structure and subtle tannins without harshness. It is aged in French oak barrels typically 50%-80% new) for 18–20 months. The average production is 10.000 cases. Since 1995, they also produce a second wine named “La Croix de Beaucaillou”.

Top vintages for Château Ducru-Beaucaillou are: 1959, 1961, 1970, 1982, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
