Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2010 is a Cabernet Sauvignon-led red wine from the Saint-Julien region, produced on a gravelly plot strewn with stones, the very stones that gave the winery its name. The year 2010 was marked by severe drought across the entire Bordeaux region. Precipitation from April through October was less than half that of 2009 (which was itself a vintage with little rain), and water shortages began early: March was drier than average, while April and May experienced truly severe drought. Fortunately, the sun shone without bringing intense heat. The ripening conditions from July to September were similar to those of 2005 and 2009, and the sunshine continued through October, when the grapes for the finest red wines were harvested. The harvest at Ducru-Beaucaillou was carried out entirely by hand, and the timing was later than in the two years mentioned earlier.

Dry years favor the best vineyards, and the deep gravel soil of Saint-Julien is precisely that. The wines from this vintage possess a firm structure rather than a soft texture. They are dense and well-structured, and it will likely take at least 10 years for the tannins to mellow. Furthermore, this Left Bank wine is one of those that best represent this vintage. The sorting process was extremely rigorous, with grapes carefully selected using three sorting tables (one of which was set up right in the middle of the vineyard) and an optical sorter.
