The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru, which comes from late-picked grapes, has just a slight reduction on the nose. There’s lemon verbena and hints of brioche, an underlying mineralité that only reluctantly emerges. The palate is very well-balanced with an effective reduction, concentrated with a deep and grippy finish. Quite a toothsome Chassagne this.
Like the Folatières, there is a vague suggestion of the exotic suffusing the pretty floral, spice, mineral reduction and just sliced apple scents. The caressing and strikingly textured medium-bodied flavors possess excellent punch and minerality, all wrapped in a firm and lingering finish that is quite tightly wound. This too needs more depth so plan to cellar it for at least a few years first.
A lively lime inflected yellow. The nose is backward though speaks just a little of the limestone hillside. The intensity is there but I know more exciting examples. Quite good length of flavour. Not quite singing but may just need more elevage.
