Produced with 50% destemmed fruit, the 2024 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes lifts from the glass with aromas of dark plum, spice, chocolate and cassis. Medium- to full-bodied, supple and charming, its vibrant core of fruit is framed by powdery, structuring tannins.

80–85% whole bunch. 50% new oak. Cask sample.
Quite pale mid ruby. Red cherry, cassis and some undergrowth interest on the nose. High, lively acidity. Dry palate all the way to the finish with some quite robust tannins. This is missing a little sweetness and breadth on the palate. Matthew Hayes

Once again, the nose is completely reduced. By contrast, there is again good punch to the gorgeously textured middle weight flavors that retain good detail that carries over to the sleek, classy and lightly austere finale that is very tightly wound. Like several wines in the range, this too could use better depth so at least some keeping is in order.

A royal purple colour. Just a little bit of the torrefied barrel toast on the nose, alongside a deep savoury red fruit. Fresh alpine strawberry, then a saline note along with the pepper at the finish. Picked on the first day so destemmed 15%. No signs of the stems drying anything out.
