Coming primarily from the front of the property, closest to Highway 29, the 2023 Othello Red Wine sees the least new oak of the three wines emanating from the Dominus vineyard, only 15% to 20%. This blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Petit Verdot offers up a pleasant mix of cherries, pomegranate and cassis, plus subtle herbal notes and a hint of orange zest on the nose, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is silky-textured, ending on a tart, cranberry-ish note.
Plum, red currant, cedar, sandalwood, spice and stone aromas follow through to a medium body with a solid core of fruit and dried oranges and pure fruit at the end. Juicy, savory and framed finish. Drink now.
The third wine of this great estate (and made in reasonable quantities), the 2023 Othello is a pretty, Bordeaux-like effort with juicy black cherry, leather, and tobacco notes in a medium-bodied, charming, deliciously balanced, satisfying style. Based on 89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Petit Verdot and aged 18 months in 20% new French oak, it's best enjoyed over the coming 7-8 years.
