This is very tense and concentrated with an alluring character of ripe red and dark berries, hints of spicy herbs, black licorice and graphite. Full-bodied, deep and dynamic on the palate with a broad and firm backbone of tannins that are very refined and run the whole length of the wine. Really big and still slightly chewy, but so well crafted. Really long. From organically grown grapes.

As is typical of this vintage, the 2020 Monteverro boasts a fruitier and more joyful personality, with notes of lavender, blueberries, plum, and crushed sage. The palate offers more serious structure than the nose would suggest and is full-bodied, with ripe tannins and savory notes of tea leaf through the finish. It has a meatier profile on the palate and a more serious nature.

The aromatics of the 2020 lead with black liquorice, charcuterie, violets, conifer, and wet river stone with leather and brown spices. Full-bodied with citrusy acidity and bold, powerful tannins. Long and layered. The winery is in Capalbio, in the Tuscan Maremma, about a mile from the sea as the crow flies. The estate harbours 24.28 hectares of vines on eroded stony soils, much like the round river rocks of the Rhône Valley. The in-house winemaker is Matthieu Taunay, and Jean Hoefliger has served as a consultant since 2008, the first vintage. The winery is a state-of-the-art facility, allowing for stainless steel, concrete egg, and barrel fermentation. The blend for Monteverro always leads with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The wines are half barrel fermented and half stainless steel fermented with roughly 70-80% new French oak for 24 months, with native yeast leading the way. The blend here includes 5% Petit Verdot.
