The Gaja 2022 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo offers an angular or chiseled bouquet that is vertical, taut and full of tension. This wine always has that nervous character that bodes well for its future bottle evolution. Pressed flowers and roses are followed by chalky mineral and black salt. The 2022 vintage is a little bigger, with broader shoulders than most, but it delivers lots of pleasure and a beautiful, elegant drinking experience.
Elegant wine with a filigree nose of leafy lightness, watermelon, super restrained strawberries and sweet violets, as well as cherrystone and tangy mineral undertones. High-flying tannins dominate the palate, chiseled to perfection, with full body, density and extraction, yet overall elegance even now. Acidity carries the finish gracefully. It will develop more complexity in the next ten years and more, so try from 2027. But it’s excellent to drink even now.
The 2022 Barbaresco Sori San Lorenzo is more contemplative of a wine, with aromas of deeper spice and an earthier component compared to the Tildin, but as it opens, it takes on pure notes of cherry liqueur, preserved orange, and forest earth. The palate is elegant but with a velvety texture upfront, even freshness, with a deeper richness to its texture. Long on the palate, with a long finish, it’s built for the long haul and is likely going score even higher in the future.
