Claude Dugat's Gevrey Chambertin 2021 is a village-level red wine produced in Gevrey-Chambertin, Côte de Nuits, and is made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes. The 2021 growing season in Burgundy was cool, and things did not go smoothly from the start: Cold air from the Arctic moved in on Easter Monday, 5 April, and during the frosty nights of 6, 7 and 8 April, temperatures in some areas dropped as low as -8°C. Although the harvest results for Côte de Nuits were better than those for Côte de Beaune, the yield was still about 25% lower than the five-year average. Although the cool, rainy summer brought mildew pressure, northerly winds began blowing in September, keeping the vines dry and ensuring cool nighttime temperatures. The harvest continued into the latter half of September.
The result was a Gevrey with a leaner, more classically proportioned profile compared to warmer vintages. The grapes were completely destemmed, the cap was manually punched down twice daily, and there was minimal pumping over. This is a gentler extraction method, which is particularly important in a cool vintage where there is little room for fruit flavors to mask any shortcomings.
Best enjoyed through 2038.
