Gevrey Chambertin 2019 Claude Dugat

Claude Dugat's Gevrey-Chambertin 2019 is a village-level red wine from the Côte de Nuits, made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes harvested from 8 to 10 individual vineyards within the commune. This blend of diverse vineyards is the very essence of this wine. By blending grapes from multiple vineyards, the domaine has created a village-level cuvée with a broader flavor profile than a wine produced from a single vineyard.

The 2019 vintage yielded a small harvest of small, thick-skinned grapes, which led to a concentration of all components, including tannins. Temperatures in late June soared to around 40°C, and the winery proceeded with the harvest early, as is their custom. While sugar levels were similar to those of 2018, the fruit retained higher acidity. This balance of ripeness and grip is precisely what characterizes the 2019 vintage from this region.

The winemaking process remained unchanged. The stems were completely removed, and no whole-cluster grapes were used. The cap was punched down twice a day, with no pumping over at all in 2019. Approximately 40% new oak barrels were used for this cuvée, which was aged in oak for 15-16 months prior to bottling, without any fining or filtration.

The wine shows lots of fruit, nice tannins and balanced acidity, it feels like a Village Gevrey with a dense, robust structure. It is best to let it breathe or, better yet, allow it to age over time. It will be at its best through 2036.
