The 2022 growing season got off to a challenging start in Saint-Émilion, but conditions were ideal: spring frosts threatened the region in early April, but the limestone plateau of Ausone escaped damage. A warm, dry summer followed, and in September the weather was ideal for harvesting. At Château Ausone, this produced concentrated Cabernet Franc and elegant Merlot, resulting in very well balanced wines. Thanks to minimal intervention by the Vauthier family, the 2022 vintage produced wines that clearly testify to the terroir and combine the intensity of the harvest with the mineral character typical of this estate.
The 2022 Ausone opens in the glass with a brooding bouquet of raspberry preserve, licorice, rose petals and creamy new oak. Full-bodied, deep and dense, it's layered and textural, with a sweet core of fruit framed by powdery, youthfully grippy tannins, concluding with a discreetly heady finish. It's a serious, structured Ausone that will require a bit of patience.
Wow. This is such a big and beautiful Ausone with huge depth that slowly uncoils. Really powerful, mineral and naturally concentrated, with iron, chalk and a rich, almost opulent core of black fruit, but really fresh, with chiseled tapenade and wood spices that only tiptoe on the nose. Superb intensity hidden beneath the palate, with a matrix of chalky tannins that vibrate, shine and extend. Nothing stops it at the finish, which lasts well over a minute. Almost beguilingly drinkable considering the tannin quality, which is so fine and energetic, but I'd give it at least 3-4 years to let the wood spices integrate more and let the wine grow with more complexity. A bigger Ausone with higher alcohol, but fantastic and rather outrageous. 60% cabernet franc and 40% merlot. This will age well for at least two decades.
50% Cabernet Franc, 50% Merlot. Cask sample.
Unusually aromatic at this early stage. Complex floral and red- and dark-fruit notes. Uncompromisingly dense with plentiful but fine tannins. Smooth texture. No hard edges but firm and persistent. Plenty of potential. (JL)
The 2022 Ausone, which was the earliest-picked ever on September 5 (although that is later than Cheval Blanc) has another very intense bouquet with layers of plush blackberry, blueberry, crushed violet and incense aromas that are beautifully entwined with the 100% new oak. Hints of blood orange emerge with a few minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins and perfectly pitched acidity. The slightly higher proportion of Cabernet Franc imparts a touch more pepperiness toward the finish. You can feel this on your tongue long after it has departed. There is a surfeit of freshness on the finish. This is an outstanding Ausone that can look forward to a very long future.
Lastly, the Grand Vin 2022 Château Ausone is based on equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot that spent 20 months in new barrels. Smoky black cherries, mulberries, iron, violets, and spring flower notes are just some of its nuances, and it's deep purple-hued, with full-bodied richness and a surprising level of elegance, purity, and precision. This is one of the more elegant, finesse-driven, yet still incredibly powerful examples of this Château that I can remember. It deserves a decade of cellaring and will evolve for half a century.
Notes of black currant and graphite from the Cabernet Franc and deep plum nuances from the Merlot. Underneath there is an almost mineral coolness characteristic of limestone terroirs. On the palate, the 2022 shows remarkable concentration without heaviness. The tannins are firm but refined, suggesting that this vintage has the structure to withstand extended aging. A rich mid-palate leads to a long, mineral-laden finish with hints of dark chocolate and cedar. This is Ausone's most structured wine, powerful and precise, taking time to fully unfold but already showing its fruitiness.
The 2022 Château Ausone has challenged the typical Saint-Émilion formula. While many domains rely on Merlot, Ausone produces mainly Cabernet Franc. Why this choice? Ausone's calcareous soils are ideal for Cabernet Franc, revealing its aromatic complexity and mineral backbone. Merlot fills in the rest, adding fleshiness and roundness to the structure. However, it is the predominance of Cabernet Franc that gives Ausone its characteristic lifted flavors, finer tannins and a pronounced limestone minerality not found in Merlot-dominated wines.
The best period is between 2030 and 2050, but patient collectors can wait longer: the backbone of the 2022 Cabernet Franc combines with the minerality of the limestone to create a wine suitable for long aging. It will need at least eight years to soften the firm tannins, but the acidity will remain fresh for decades when stored at 12-14°C in a vibration-free environment. Over time, the primary fruitiness will develop into leather, tobacco and truffle nuances, while the mineral backbone will remain unchanged and the typical mature character of Ausone is expected to emerge.
What sets Château Ausone apart? First of all, it's the size. At just seven hectares, they are small even by Bordeaux standards. But what really sets them apart is the approach of the Vauthier family, who have owned the estate for 11 generations since the late 1800s and still farm it as if every vine matters. They don't have a fixed schedule; they decide when to act based on the taste of the fruit. Then, in the mid-1990s, when the Vauthier family bought out the co-owners, everything changed. The quality improved dramatically. This single-mindedness is evident in every bottle. In 2022, they abandoned the Saint-Émilion grading system, preferring to let the wines speak for themselves.
Ausone is located on a plot of land that locals call Roc Blancan, literally "white rock." The vineyard is divided into a limestone plateau and a clay-limestone slope, each contributing different elements. On the plateau, the vines are deeply rooted in weathered limestone, creating the mineral backbone for which Ausone is famous. The slopes are clay-limestone soils, where the clay holds water during drought and the limestone forms the framework. The east and southeast facing sites receive morning sun, but are protected from harsh winds by the surrounding cliffs. The nearby river mitigates temperature fluctuations. This combination paid off during the severe frosts of 1956 and other historical frost events.
Important decisions at Ausone are made after harvest. They vinify each plot in small wooden vats. Why wooden vats and not stainless steel? Because they are easier to control the temperature and the extraction is gentler. No pumps are used to move the wine, and gravity is used to preserve the subtle flavors. Once fermentation is complete, the wine is moved to the underground cellar, which was converted from an 18th century limestone quarry. The wines are aged for 16-18 months in French oak barrels. This limestone cellar naturally maintains perfect humidity and temperature, and much of the ageing takes place without human intervention.
The mineral backbone of this wine demands structured food. The delicate fleshiness does not overpower Ausone's refined tannins, and rosemary and thyme enhance the wine's herbal notes. For a richer flavor, serve the duck breast with a cherry sauce. The fruitiness of the sauce reflects the dark berry character of the wine, while the duck fat softens the firm tannins. For aged bottles, a risotto with porcini mushrooms will be magical: serve it at 18°C and decant the young wines for at least an hour.
