The 2017 Poggio alle Gazze dell'Ornellaia takes a back seat compared to the more exuberant, intense and complex vintage to come immediately before this. I tasted the 2016 and 2017 releases side by side. This wine offers a lower aromatic threshold with dried flower and summer grass. Generally speaking, the wine offers less fruit and more dryness that directly reflects the dusty heat of the 2017 summer season. You can almost taste that dry summer heat in this Sauvignon Blanc-driven blend of white grapes.
I love the nose here of honeysuckle, dried jasmine, daffodils, apricot pie and peach flan with some butterscotch undertones. Full-bodied and intense, but very precise in its delivery of sleek stone fruit and steely acidity.
