The best wines from Saint-Emilion

Saint-Emilion is located in Bordeaux's Libournais district, on the right bank of the Garonne River. It is located approximately 35 kilometres northeast of Bordeaux city and has a border with Montagne-Saint-Emilion to the north. Saint-Emilion is known for producing high-quality red wines. The wines consist mainly out of Merlot (79%), with smaller percentages of Cabernet Franc (15%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (6%). Saint-Emilion was officially recognised as an AOC in 1936, and the region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wines from Saint-Emilion are renowned for their richness and ageing potential, with the "Saint-Emilion Grand Cru" label indicating superior quality.

The soils at Saint-Emilion are diverse including clay, limestone and gravel. Merlot thrives here, resulting in smooth, full-bodied wines. The "Grand Cru" wines are made from lower-yielding vineyards, resulting in more concentrated flavours. The region's classification system, which includes Saint-Emilion Grand Cru and Premier Grand Cru Classe (A and B), honours the highest-quality producers.
