Aubry
The vineyards of wine house Aubry are located in the town of Jouy-lès-Reims, southwest of the city of Reims. Pierre and Philippe Aubry come from a winemaking family and have been able to learn the tricks of the trade from an early age. Pierre went on to study at the University of Montpellier and he graduated as an oenologist. Philippe, on the other hand, studied biology. Between them, they have all the expertise to produce extraordinary champagnes. In 1986, they embarked on this adventure together and they have been able to combine their knowledge!
The vineyard area is spread over 50 different plots and covers a total area of 12 hectares. It all starts with terroir driven champagnes. Because of the many different plots that are in use, Aubry has to deal with many terroirs. This results in various different grapes, each with their own character. What really sets Aubry apart from other champagne producers is that they choose to work with little known and almost forgotten varieties, such as Petit Meslier, Arbanne, and Fromonteau (Pinot Gris). In addition to these, they use classic varieties such as Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier, and Pinot Noir as well.
The champagnes are made by the traditional method of blending various wines and grape varieties. Some wines are blended with a reserve wine that comes from a solera system; the system associated with the production of sherry. This gives the wine a very unique character. The total bottle age is at least 18 months, but for the prestige cuvées this can run up to 4 years. This is the case for the champagnes Le Nombre d'Or, Aubry de Humbert and Aubry Ivoire et Ébène. These are all beautiful wines with a lot of complexity, length, light mousse, and fresh acidity.
The champagnes of the Aubry brothers are unique and made from unusual grape varieties. Of the past thirty years, the exceptional Champagne vintages are: 1995, 1996, 2002, 2008 and 2012.
