Mondavi's 2023 Fume Blanc The Reserve To Kalon Vineyard boasts those lovely barrel notes that virtually defined this wine in Robert Mondavi's mind. Sourced exclusively from the Monastery Block for this vintage, pear, melon and fig notes lead the way, but there's also enough grapefruit to keep this medium- to full-bodied wine focused and long on the finish. All barrel-fermented and then aged in 24% new French oak for 10 months, the wine is plump and expansive at first, then gradually tighter on the finish, with more grapefruit and lime coming through.

A very lively, fresh and subtly oaked white that's energized by great acidity for an almost chewy texture that's super appetizing. Aromas of pastry shop, white flowers, lemon zest and croissant lead to vivid citrus, mango and coconut flavors on the palate. Less obviously herbal than older vintages were. Intricate, mineral-laden and slightly flinty.

The 2023 Fumé Blanc The Reserve To Kalon Vineyard is a powerful, tightly wound wine. All of this fruit was sourced from the Monastery Block, one of the most prestigious parts of the vineyard. Powerful and quite structured, the 2023 is going to need a few years to soften. Bracing saline notes, crushed rocks, white orchard fruit and white pepper are all finely sculpted.
