The most reserved and tightly wound of these communal-level bottlings from Lachaux, the 2019 Vosne-Romanée Hautes-Maizières unfurls in the glass with notions of plums and raspberries mingled with sweet spices, orange rind and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, layered and super concentrated, with an introverted core of fruit that's framed by fine but youthfully firm structuring tannins, this will demand and reward a bit of patience.
The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Hautes Maizières has an exquisitely defined bouquet with transparent red cherries and crushed strawberry on the nose, very harmonious with light sous-bois aromas percolating through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine backbone, almost a Malconsorts-lite (not written pejoratively I might add!) But there is impressive grip here for a Village Cru with pleasing salinity on the finish. Give it just another 24 months in bottle.
A more deeply pitched and spicier nose speaks of various dark berries, violet, sandalwood and hoisin. The very rich and generously proportioned medium-bodied flavors possess an opulent mid-palate, yet the finish is precise, compact, restrained and youthfully austere. Like the Poisets, this is a simply terrific villages level Vosne and is also highly recommended.
The Hautes Maizières displays the same fine colour and effortless bouquet as its predecessors in the line-up. In many ways this is a more restrained and more mineral wine, with a classical edge of purity alongside its natural power. Really long finish Tasted Oct 2020.
