This astonishing dry riesling has an extraordinarily complex nose that’s brimming with spice, mandarin orange, mango and persimmon. Still very tightly wound on the medium-bodied palate with a whiplash acidity that could wake the dead. However, the balance is already spot on, the ripeness, creaminess and minerality so precisely matched. Staggering racy energy at the simultaneously gigantic and filigree finish. Drink or hold.
Spitz. Steep, terraced site with aspects varying from west to south at 208–328 m. Shallow, sandy soils on paragneiss.
Ripe citrus fruits, white blossoms. Fresh and peachy with edgy herbal refreshment. Playful and meandering, raw-silk texture and a long stony finish. Beautiful balance. (PS)
The 2022 Riesling Singerriedel Smaragd was harvested with about 5% botrytised fruit. The nose has a lifted notion of candied citrus that flits away to reveal ripe tangerine and aromatic navel orange. The palate is ripe and has the merest edge of honey on a rich, smooth, even bold mouthfeel. All is channeled by Riesling’s essential acidity structure and drive. This is a super-ripe but super-defined Riesling that is emblematic for the term and category of contemporary Smaragd—golden, fluid and long with expressive, ripe citrus tones. (Bone-dry)
