The 2022 growing season in Bolgheri brought Mediterranean warmth and timely rains, which were almost ideal conditions for the Bordeaux varieties grown at Ornellaia. Spring came early, ensuring a steady bloom on the 99 hectares of the estate. The summer heat was intense, but it was beaten by cool sea breezes from the Tyrrhenian coast, just 5 km away. For Tenuta dell' Ornellaia, this meant a harvest of concentrated fruit without the stresses that plague vineyards in the Tuscan hinterland. Harvesting began in early September, allowing each variety to reach optimum ripeness. The result is a vintage that combines the power and elegance that characterizes the great Bolgheri wines.
Tasted a few months after it was bottled, the Ornellaia 2022 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia will be coming to market in March 2025. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. The wine sees 18 months of aging with up to 70% new oak, but the trick, proprietor Lamberto Frescobaldi tells me, is drawing from a large group of coopers with different toast levels and forests. "I don't want to make a wine of any one tonnellerie," he says. The oak element is crucial to the identity of this wine that reveals dark fruit, blackberry, sweet spice and cinnamon. Most of the vines were planted in the 1980s, and the average age of the plants is over 20 years old. Fruit comes from many parcels, including Bellaria, Bellaria Nuova, Bellaria Alta, Pero, Fosso, Vigna Vecchia and Stallina. Indeed, some 80 wines are made before final blending. The 2022 vintage will be remembered for its full-bodied appeal, concentrated fruit and generous oak renderings. Petit Verdot plays a slightly larger role in this vintage and was one of the surprise hits of 2022. It serves to elongate the wine and adds to its length. The wine's abundant fruit weight cedes to elegantly integrated tannins. This vintage will appeal to die-hard Ornellaia enthusiasts.
A Mediterranean-style wine. Stunning elegance on the nose, with vibrant dried eucalyptus leaves, flowers, restrained brambleberries and hints of black cherries, dried bananas, milk chocolate, cloves and graphite. The palate is full-bodied with elegant tannins and a touch of dust. It’s savory and well packed, with integrated, brilliant freshness and a ripe, fruity finish with a toasty aftertaste of blond tobacco.
The 2022 Ornellaia is a terrific wine for the year. Dark red-toned fruit, mocha, new leather, licorice and spice all take shape in a mid-weight, pliant Ornellaia that is quite alluring, even in the early going. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot, unusual for the elevated presence of Petit Verdot, which did better than Franc in 2022. The higher percentage of Petit Verdot comes through in the wine’s dark-leaning personality and also in the quality of tannins. More than anything else, the 2022 is a reminder of how important a tool blending is, especially in challenging years. I can’t wait to see how this ages. The 2022 Ornellaia is clearly among the most successful wines of the vintage.
Opening with dark notes of blackcurrant and cedar, Ornellaia 2022 immediately shows Cabernet Sauvignon structure. But there is a softness to it as well. The Merlot influence is evident in plump blackberry notes and hints of dark chocolate. The nose develops in the glass, revealing Mediterranean herbs and the pencil-sharp character typical of Cabernet Franc. On the palate, the tannins are firm but refined, indicating that the wine was aged in French barriques for 18 months and integrated beautifully. The finish has notes of graphite and tobacco, typical of the Left Bank of Bordeaux, but with an intensity typical of sun-warmed Tuscany. Drink this wine from 2028 to show its best.
This blend says a lot about Bolgheri's potential:
Cabernet Sauvignon is the foundation of everything, thanks to its structure and length. And Merlot softens those facets, adding complexity. The real surprise is the 10% Petit Verdot, which is rare in most estates but gives Ornellaia its characteristic spiciness and intensity of color. Cabernet Franc enhances the flavors.
Peak drinking time: 2028-2048.This wine has a firm tannic backbone, but not overwhelmingly so, and needs to age for a long time. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides the backbone, and the French oak barrels contribute further aging. Store at 55-58 degrees if possible. Over the next 10 years, the fruit will meld with the oak and secondary aromas of tobacco, leather, and forest floor will emerge.
Lodovico Antinori founded Tenuta dell'Ornellaia in 1981. He planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc on coastal soils composed of mixed clay-limestone and marine sediments, more like Bordeaux than Chianti. By 2005, the Frescobaldi family took full ownership and now produces Le Volte, Le Serre Nuove, the white Poggio alle Gazze and the flagship Bolgheri Superiore. We believe that this first bet still defines what Ornellaia is today.
Bolgheri is located on the Tyrrhenian coast, in the Maremma region, where Bordeaux grapes thrive, but Sangiovese, the classic Tuscan variety, does not. Why is soil so important here? Because Ornellaia's vineyards are dotted with alluvial gravel, clayey limestone, sand and old marine sediments, all within walking distance of each other. This diversity of soils allows each grape variety to find its own plot. Add to this a maritime climate with warm days and cool nights drawn from the sea, and it is for this reason that Bolgheri DOC, founded in 1994, has become home to the Super Tuscans.
Each variety, and often each site, is fermented separately in stainless steel and temperature-controlled concrete. This separation is crucial and allows the blending team to select only the very best from dozens of individual batches, which become the Grand Vin. Aging takes place in 225-liter French oak barriques (a traditional size for Bordeaux, with an optimal oak-to-wine ratio) for 18 months. First, the grapes are hand-picked and sorted on the table. There is nothing exotic about this. Just strict sorting at every stage.
Tannins look for protein and fat. Bistecca alla Fiorentina is an obvious combination, the charring of the T-bone echoes the oak, and beef fat softens the grip. Brasato al Barolo, cooked over low heat and arranged in layers, works for the same reason. Pappardelle with wild boar ragù brings out savory notes. The aged pecorino Toscano creates a lovely contrast; decant an hour before serving; serve at 16-18°C.
