"Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru" Wine, 2022 vintage by Millemann. Aged in a single 500-liter barrel, this white wine is made from the Grand Cru Burgundy variety grown on the Corton hillside and is a single-varietal wine made from the Chardonnay variety. Pierre Millemann does not own any vineyards. He sources the grapes from growers for whom he serves as a consultant. He vinifies the wine together with them and sets aside one barrel from that batch for his family project. This constitutes the entire production.
The winemaking process intentionally adheres to a minimalist style, keeping intervention to an absolute minimum. This is the approach he has practiced for over 30 years. Additionally, while the grapes for white wine are crushed before pressing, a practice that is not standard, this is a deliberate measure to develop the phenolic structure and create the unique springiness and texture characteristic of Chardonnay, which many producers seek to avoid.
As for the vintage, the period from April to September in 2022 was blessed with nearly record-breaking heat and sunshine, and rainfall came at just the right time. The harvest began early. Ripeness was good, resulting in white wines that are exceptionally aromatic, with alcohol levels often lower than in 2020 and slightly softer acidity. Good to Very Good, this is the candid assessment of the 2022 Burgundy white wines as a whole, which emphasize texture rather than the liveliness of acidity.
These wines are best enjoyed by 2034.
