The 2018 Máté's Brunello di Montalcino is a Sangiovese red wine produced at Santa Restituta in Montalcino, Tuscany, and firmly belongs to the cooler, more classic style of the Brunello. The 2018 vintage broke the trend of consecutive hot years. Average temperatures were about 5°C lower than in 2017 and 2°C lower than in 2019, and growers in the Montalcino region compared this season to the 1990s rather than to any recent year. Winter rain and snow replenished water reserves that had been depleted by the 2017 drought, spring was cool and damp, and thanks to the cool weather in September, ripeness returned to an appropriate level.

Results across the appellation were uneven, a point that clearly needs to be noted. In 2018, the producer was more important than the vintage. Máté meticulously tends to a series of very small vineyards by hand, an approach that pays off in seasons like this one. This wine has a medium body and a slender structure, grounded more in aroma and acidity than in weight. Total production ranges from 2,000 to 2,500 cases, and the 2018 vintage of Brunellos began hitting the market starting with the 2023 vintage of January.
