Geantet Pansiot
In 1954, Edmond Jante and Bernadette Pansio were married and pooled their small vineyards to start making wine on three hectares of land situated between Gevrey-Chambertin and the ‘Burgundy’ appellation. There were no grand ambitions, just two families working together in one of Burgundy’s most renowned villages.
Edmond’s son, Vincent, joined the family business in 1977 and took full charge of the estate in 1989, gradually expanding the vineyard holdings and refining the winemaking techniques. His son, Fabien, grew up in the vineyards and cellars and joined the family business in 2006. Today, Vincent and Fabien run the estate together, whilst their daughter and sister, Émilie, produces her own wines under a personal label. The estate’s motto: Être sobre, c'est boire bon (To drink in moderation is to savour fine wine). It is printed on every label, reflecting the family’s rigorous approach to their work and their unassuming style.
Vineyards
Starting with just 3 hectares, the estate has now expanded to approximately 13 hectares of owned and managed vineyards, situated within the most revered appellations of the Côte de Nuits. The estate’s principal vineyards are situated in Gevrey-Chambertin, comprising over 4.5 hectares of village-level vineyards, as well as Grand Cru plots such as ‘Jeunes Rois’ and ‘Croisettes’. Premier Cru plots include ‘Poissenot’ in Gevrey and ‘Les Feusselottes’ (Les Feusselottes). Among the estate’s top wines are a 0.45-hectare plot in the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru and a small parcel in Clos Vougeot. The average age of the vines across the estate’s vineyards is approximately 40 years.
Terroir
Gevrey-Chambertin is situated in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits. The typical Burgundian soil structure here, a limestone base overlaid with clay-marl topsoil, endows Pinot Noir with body, depth and ageing potential. Compared to its southern neighbour, Chambolle-Musigny, which is renowned for its light, aromatic style, wines from the Gevrey appellation are typically more powerful and structured. Domaine Giannantoni-Panzio’s vineyards span both villages, enabling the estate to present a diverse range of styles across its entire portfolio.
Grape Varieties
The vineyards are almost exclusively planted with Pinot Noir. Although the estate produces a small quantity of white wine from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir reds remain the primary focus. No chemical fertilisers are used in the vineyards.
Winemaking
Harvesting is carried out entirely by hand, followed by careful sorting of the bunches on a vibrating sorting table. After thorough destemming, the grapes undergo cold maceration, followed by fermentation at 10°C for approximately 10 days. Only indigenous yeasts are used during fermentation, with daily punch-downs and pump-overs. After approximately 20 to 22 days of maceration, the wine is transferred to oak barrels. The wine is aged for 13 to 14 months in French oak barrels (approximately 30% new), with monthly stirring of the lees. No fining or filtration is carried out prior to bottling.
Wines
The entry-level choice is the pure-style ‘Gevrey-Chambertin Village’, which is full-bodied and sincere in character. The ‘Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes’ is made from old vines sourced from various plots and is usually the best introduction to the estate’s style: rich in flavour, with distinct fruit aromas and a tight structure. The Premier Cru wines, ‘Pouilly-Chambertin’ and ‘Les Fossolets’, each clearly express their unique terroir. As for the Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru, despite its extremely limited production, it is one of the estate’s most sought-after wines. Total production across all appellations amounts to approximately 90,000 bottles per year, a modest output by most standards, yet sufficient to ensure that Geantet-Pansiot remains a focus of attention for professional Burgundy wine buyers worldwide.
