Tasted as a preview prior to bottling, the Duemani 2018 Syrah Suisassi is a gorgeous wine and ultimately more balanced compared to the 2017 vintage that I tasted at the same time for comparison. The 2017 shows richer concentration and a touch of bitterness on the tannins. This 2018 vintage, however, is smooth, fine and supple. It's a true gem and one of the best wines I have tasted yet from Luca D'Attoma and Elena Celli. Dark fruit cedes to mahogany and barbecue spice. Seamless, smooth and powerful, this is a one-way ticket into the heart of the Syrah grape without the heaviness or overextraction that you find in other warm-climate regions that focus on this variety. High-altitude vineyards facing the Tyrrhenian Sea make the difference.
Ripe black cherries, wild blackberries, blackcurrants, nutmeg, licorice, mahogany, musk and some dried thyme on the nose. It’s full-bodied and polished with intense blue and black-fruit flavors, wonderfully balanced with wood, spice and smoky notes. Velvety, integrated tannins. Such focus and precision. Already stunning and hard to resist now, but better in a couple of years.
Intense dark ruby-violet colour. Very expressive and appealing nose, full of clear ripe blueberry, blackberry and plum fruit and a rich savouriness in the background. Juicy and rich on the palate with a lot of concise berry fruit, grippy, dense tannin and a very long finish.
