The Kamptal region, named after the Kamp River, is one of Austria's thriving export wine regions due to its many high quality wines, despite its relatively small size. Located 55 kilometers northwest of Vienna in northern Austria, it holds a distinct position in the assortment of Austrian wines. Among all the vineyards in the Kamptal, Grüner Veltliner is the primary grape variety. In 2008, Kamptal was granted a DAC (Districtus Austriae Controllatus) classification for its wines, mandating that all wines must be dry. The DAC classification solely encompasses Grüner Veltliner and Riesling grapes. These wines are permitted to contain a maximum of 15 percent of other approved grape varieties. Hence, a Kamptal Riesling or Grüner Veltliner represents a specific type of Riesling originating from Austria's Kamptal wine region. This designation is reserved for Riesling wines crafted within this particular area, acknowledged for their outstanding quality and distinctive attributes.
The quality levels are determined by the protected designation of origin: Kamptal DAC with the indication of municipality and/or and vineyard, or the Kamptal Reserve. The minimum alcohol volume for Kamptal DAC is 11.5%. However, it varies based on whether it denotes the municipality, municipality and vineyard, or the reserve, which requires minimum percentages of 12, 12.5, and 13 percent, respectively.
