Aromas of cherries, cassis, woodsmoke, caramelized orange rind and rich soil tones introduce Dugat's 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques, a medium to full-bodied, lively and precise wine with a darker fruit profile, more mid-palate amplitude and a longer finish than the domaine's premier cru blend. Lively and mineral, this is an especially fine-boned Lavaux Saint-Jacques.

Firm reduction again renders the nose impossible to assess. By contrast there is terrific punch and freshness to the muscular, big and bold flavors that brim with both dry extract and minerality before concluding in a powerful, serious and wonderfully long finale. This isn't a refined wine, yet neither is it especially rustic thanks to the reasonably fine-grained tannins. Ultimately, if you have the patience to age this to full maturity, it should be marvelous.
