Le Volte 2023 is a red Toscana IGT from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot grapes grown along the Tuscan coast. The vines here are planted on three types of soil: marine sediment deposited by the sea; alluvial marly and sandy clays shot through with mineral veins; and volcanic soil composed of schist, gravel, and porous layers.
In 2023, frequent rain during the flowering and fruit-setting periods reduced the yield, resulting in a smaller quantity of grapes available for processing. The winter was mild, and precipitation was approximately 117 mm below average. There was no rain throughout September, allowing the late-ripening varieties ample time to reach full maturity.
Each variety is fermented separately in small stainless steel tanks, and malolactic fermentation also takes place in these tanks. Aging lasts 10 months, with some wine aged in barriques (small oak barrels) previously used for Ornellaia and some in concrete tanks.
It is ready to drink now, though it is even better after being decanted for about an hour. It is best enjoyed by 2030.
