The 2019 growing season in Napa Valley was long and evenly ripe, with cooler temperatures following the wet winters of 2017 and 2018. For Shafer's Relentless wine, harvested on the hillsides in the Stags Leap neighborhood, the syrah and petite sirah were fully ripe but still retained their acidity. As a result, the 2019 wine feels structured rather than jammy, and is one of winemaker Elias Fernandez's most concentrated recent releases.
The 2019 Relentless is a blend of 89% Syrah and 11% Petite Sirah that spent 30 months in 100% new French oak. The nose is a bit briary, with intriguing herbal complexities from the Syrah, vibrant purple-raspberry fruit and perhaps some blueberry fruit from the Petite Sirah. This is full-bodied, tannic, sturdy stuff that needs time to come around, but as it's packed with fruit, that shouldn't be an issue.
Rich and deep dark-fruited character with hints of roast bacon, chocolate and grilled herbs. Full-bodied with a broad, structured palate that has a deep core of dark berry fruit, and an array of plush, velvety tannins that lasts for minutes, leading to a polished, slightly chewy finish. 90% syrah and 10% petit syrah.
The 2019 Relentless is gorgeous. Bright and intensely savory, the 2019 bristles with energy. Black pepper, sage, tobacco, incense and dried herbs lend tons of nuance to this expressive Syrah/Petite Sirah blend. There's quite a bit of energy here and also a bit less heft than most previous vintages, a reflection of a move towards slightly cooler sites.
The 2019 Relentless is mostly Syrah, yet the cuvée always includes a good bit of Petite Sirah, with 11% in the 2019. A deep purple-hued blockbuster of a Syrah, it offers loads of ripe blackberries, ground pepper, sappy herbs, and violet-like aromas and flavors. One of those wines that delivers richness and intensity with no sensation of weight of heaviness, it has terrific balance, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Enjoy bottles over the coming 10-15 years.
Powerful and enticing aromas of Kirsch, toasted cedarwood, caramel, and scored herbs draw you into the glass, revealing even more nuances of late-summer mountain scrub brush balanced by springtime violets. Seductively silky Syrah notes of black cherry, blackberry, white pepper, and charcuterie entice the senses. It is a generous wine with a harmoniously soft palate expression balanced by firm, fine-grained tannins, finishing extremely long with crushed cocoa nibs and blood orange acidity. Syrah and Petite Sirah grapes are harvested from ridgetop and foothill sites along the Vaca Mountains, just south of the Stags Leap District AVA border, aged 20 months in 100% new Allier and Tronçais French oak.
This powerful, rough-hewn wine that contains 11% Petite Sirah holds extremely deep black and blue fruits in a framework of grippy tannins. A tight, reserved expression on the midpalate signals more aging is needed for best enjoyment. The wine's ripe, compelling, late-harvest fruits match the massive structure.
First impressions: Black pepper and crushed blueberries, with a smoked meat feel underneath. On airing, the Petite Sirah comes to the fore: dark plums, violets and a touch of cocoa, emerging after many months of aging in French oak. The flavor is rich but not heavy. The tannins are firm and polished with oak, with a savory, iron edge on the finish, as is often the case with Stags Leap District. Decant it and you can drink it now.
Relentless is a Syrah-dominated blend, usually about 80% Syrah and the rest Petite Sirah. What is the role of Petite Sirah? Petite Sirah brings inky color, tenacious tannins and dark fruit. Syrah brings pepper, violets and fleshiness. In Napa's warmer climate, Syrah ripens more fully than in the Northern Rhône.
The 2019 Relentless will keep until at least 2026, with consumption time extending to 2038 or later. It needs a few more years to fully integrate the tannin structure from Petite Sirah and about 30 months of aging in French oak. Store at 12-14°C. Expect the peppery and fruity flavors to shift to leather and tobacco with age.
Shafer is a Napa-based name built on Cabernet, and Hillside Select has put them on the map for collectors around the world. But Relentless is a wine that shows what winemaker Elias Fernandez is capable of when he doesn't follow the Cabernet template. Fernandez joined the company in 1984 and has been making wine since the mid-1990s. The wines are named after his work ethic; in early 2022, the family sold Shafer to a newly formed corporation, but Doug Shafer and Fernandez stayed on. Best of Wines believes that continuity is more important than a change in ownership.
The Stags Leap District AVA was approved in 1989, becoming Napa's first sub-AVA defined by soil rather than political boundaries. Why is this important to Relentless? The Stags Leap neighborhood faces the Vaca Mountains, where the Palisades rock outcrops radiate midday heat into volcanic loamy soils. This provides the heat needed for Syrah and Petite Sirah to reach full ripeness. However, sea air blown in from San Pablo Bay quickly lowers nighttime temperatures, keeping the acidity and peppery flavors characteristic of Syrah in cooler climates.
The deciding factor for Relentless is time. It spends about 30 months in French oak, with a much higher percentage of new oak than most Napa red wines. Why so long? Petite Sirah's tannins are aggressive when young, but they level off with extended aging in oak. Fernandez ferments both grapes separately, blends them late in the vintage and uses an optical sorter to leave only pure fruit. The result is a wine that tastes oaky on release, but mellows out nicely after a few years.
Big tannins, big fruit, big food. Try:
Serve at 17-18°C. If the wine is opened young, decant for 60-90 minutes.
