Aux Brûlées is located at the foot of the slope directly below Richebourg, and the 2023 vintage produced at Méo-Camuzet is a red Premier Cru, demonstrating the potential this vineyard can unleash in a bumper harvest year. Most of the vines here were planted in the 1930s, and the reason old vines played such an important role in the 2023 vintage was that yields were high across the entire Vosne-Romanée appellation. An abundance of small millerands (small, seedless grapes with concentrated flavor) helped offset the high yield.
The harvest season itself was not without its challenges. A warm summer with cool nights, and mid-season brought rain and cooler weather, then a drawn-out veraison that stretched ripening out. Ultimately, the growers began harvesting in early fall after a rigorous selection process.
In the glass, this Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées stands out not for its weight but for the lively vibrancy of red fruit, enveloped by the coolness of the valley (combe) where the vineyard is located. That very coolness is the key. Thanks to this coolness, the wine retains its freshness.
