Georges Roumier's Chambolle-Musigny 2023 is a red village wine from the Côte de Nuits, Pinot Noir grown on clay-limestone soils by vines averaging about 40 years of age. Strictly speaking, this village wine is not a pure village wine. Grapes harvested from small plots in the 1er Crus Fuées and Plantes were vinified separately and then blended with grapes from the village parcel to create this wine. As a result, the overall quality has been elevated to a higher level.
The winemaking process follows this winery's traditional methods. Of the grapes harvested and sorted by hand, 70-80% are destemmed; punch-downs are performed during fermentation, and only natural yeasts are used. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for 16 months, with the proportion of new oak limited to 10-15%. It is bottled without fining or filtration. The oak aroma is subtly present in the background, which is precisely the intended effect.
2023 was, on paper, the hottest year on record in the Burgundy region, and while it was slightly warmer than 2022, it did not feel that way in the vineyards. The Côte d'Or region received about 10% less sunshine than average, and there was heavy rainfall, an unusual occurrence for such a hot vintage. Frosts in late March and early April came before budbreak, which took place around the 10th of April, but the damage was minimal. And, in Chambolle-Musigny, as elsewhere, yields were abundant.
