The 2023 harvest was significantly reduced due to sunburn, and what made it into this bottle came from a warm season with a cooler August before the heat returned. Gaja's Barbaresco is pure Nebbiolo from the Barbaresco DOP in Piemonte, harvested from vines averaging 40 years of age, planted across 21.4 hectares at an elevation of 250-330 meters.
Fermentation takes place on the skins for 3-4 weeks. The wine is then aged for one year in French oak barriques (225-liter small oak barrels), 20% of which are new. The wine is then blended and aged for another year in oak barrels, this time using Piemonte's traditional large oak barrels, known as Botti Grandi. Despite a total of two years of oak aging, the fruit aromas remain vividly pronounced.
Vibrant red berry aromas blend with the refreshing notes of flowers and subtle, sweet spices. A well-balanced, medium-bodied wine, it features delicate tannins with a soft chew and a long, smooth finish. It will be enjoyable early in its window, but it's even better after decanting for about 1-2 hours; the longer you wait, the more the wine's structure will shine. It's best enjoyed between 2027 and 2050.

Showing a pretty ruby appearance, the Gaja 2023 Barbaresco impresses with the extraordinary finesse and focus of its aromas. The bouquet is beautifully linear with delicate notes of wild cherry, rose and sweet spice that unfold with precision. The palate is open and charming, reflecting the warm vintage with a gentle sweetness of fruit, yet it never loses the elegance or structural definition that have long distinguished this benchmark wine. The tannins are seamlessly integrated, and despite the year's heat, the wine remains graceful and refined. The 2023 growing season, with its cooler August followed by renewed warmth, appears to have allowed the vines to adapt more successfully than in 2022, resulting in a wine that balances ripe fruit with freshness and poise.

A restrained wine with vibrant wild strawberries, lemon tree, a whiff of eucalyptus and potpourri. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s very classic and fresh. Tannins are firm and dusty yet ripe, with ferrous, savory notes. The polished finish is reminiscent of licorice and full of harmony. Drink or hold.

Just mid ruby. Quite impressive concentration on the nose with brooding raspberry and with a minerally core. Elegant and featherlight raspberry fruit and still embryonic. Great purity of fresh fruit and finely structured chewy tannins. Great balance. Walter Speller

Bottled in July 2025, the 2023 Barbaresco pours a medium ruby hue and offers an elegant perfume with refined tannins and bright acidity. Aromas of ripe raspberries, currants, fresh basil, wildflowers, and delicate graphite emerge from the glass, and the palate is mouthwatering and long, with excellent balance. Production was significantly reduced due to sunburn during the growing season, which led the estate to cut a substantial portion of the fruit.
