Clos Vougeot 1999 Dominique Laurent

Dominique Laurent's 1999 vintage Clos Vougeot is a  Grand Cru, produced in the Côte de Nuits from Pinot Noir grapes, as is almost always the case in this region of Burgundy. This wine is bottled under the name Vieilles Vignes, which means old vines. Since there is no legal definition for this term in France, it ultimately depends on how the winery interprets it, but it generally indicates that the grapes were harvested from old vines rather than young ones.

This point is significant here. The year 1999 brought Burgundy its most bountiful harvest in a generation, and the weather records for that year reveal two contrasting patterns. During the growing season, there was abundant sunshine and timely rainfall, but it rained during the harvest. The red wines showed better quality than the white wines. And because the harvest was so bountiful, the difference between great wines and mediocre ones depended on how each producer handled that vast volume.

Clos Vougeot is one of the most famous Grand Cru vineyards in Burgundy and is among the Grand Crus regularly handled by Dominique Laurent. Please enjoy it at the typical serving temperature range for aged Pinot Noir, which is around 16-18°C.
