The 2024 growing season in the Côte de Nuits proved to be quite harsh. Cool and rainy weather persisted throughout the spring, increasing the risk of powdery mildew across Burgundy; however, the efforts of winemakers to maintain clean vineyards paid off. Domaine Tortochot, which has been practicing organic farming since 2013, was fully prepared for a year like this. The “Vieilles Vignes” cuvée is made from grapes grown on old vines located on plots in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin; old vines generally cope better with difficult vintages than young ones. In warm years, Chantal Michel-Tortochot uses about 25% of the grapes as whole clusters to emphasize freshness, but in cooler years, such as 2024, one can expect a more classic Gevrey-Chambertin with pronounced notes of red berries. The wine has good structure but isn’t too heavy. This is a Pinot Noir crafted with medium- and long-term aging in mind, rather than for immediate consumption.
