The year 2002 was a year full of worries for the Right Bank. A cool and rainy summer caused winemakers no end of trouble, but dry and sunny weather in September saved the harvest for those who had patiently waited for this moment. Petrus, where Merlot is grown on the elevated clay plateau of Pomerol with blue-clay soil, managed to take full advantage of this belated stroke of good fortune. The result is a Petrus that is more restrained and possesses a classic balance compared to the rich vintages of 2000 and 2005, yet has undoubtedly retained its distinctive style.
