The 2020 growing season on the Sonoma Coast was driven by the warm summer and wildfires that raged in Northern California in August and September. Smoke risk was limited for white grapes such as Chardonnay, which were harvested earlier than red wines. Bibiana González Rave harvested the grapes for Temptress 2020 as usual, focusing on flavor and favoring acidity. The result is a Chardonnay that expresses the tension of the Sonoma Coast's cool climate in a challenging year.
Distinctive and aromatic, with salted butterscotch, nutmeg, beeswax and white pepper aromatics to complement the core of ripe peach, lemon curd and ripe melon. Complex and harmonious on the long, expressive and supple finish.
Lemon curd and white peach are the first sensations, complemented by saline and oyster shell notes that run throughout the wine. The palate is supple. There are notes of hazelnut and toasted French oak brioche, but the fruit stays up front and the acidity drives the proceedings. The finish is long and stony, more crushed stone than butter.
Temptress is 100% Chardonnay, which is a big deal for the Sonoma Coast. The fog from the Pacific Ocean passing through Petaluma Gap cools the grapes and preserves their natural acidity. So why does this region get tension instead of California luxury? Because the cool growing season delays grape ripening, and Bibiana picks grapes for flavor, not sugar content.
Drink from now through about 2032. Store at 10-13°C. Acidity is the engine of this wine and will keep it going for the next few years. Over time, the citrus notes soften to honey and the hazelnut notes become deeper; this wine is not built to age beyond 10 years.
