Domaine Ferrando has been a newcomer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape since 2004. The domain was founded in the same year by Isabel Ferrando. Isabel started her career in the financial sector, but was soon bitten by the wine bug when she experienced the winemaking process up close in Gigondas.
Isabel now owns two wineries, Domaine Ferrando and Domaine Saint-Préfert. Isabel started with less than four hectares at the time, but today this property has expanded by another thirteen hectares. The soils of her vineyards consist mainly of sand and clay. This soil composition ensures full and ripe wines. The vineyards can be divided into three parcels: Cristia, Les Roues and Colombis.
The yields per hectare are low, only 20 hl/ha. This results in highly concentrated grapes of high quality. Whether or not the bunches are de-stemmed varies per year. In very warm years, the bunches are fermented, stem and all. The aging usually takes 18 to 36 months and takes place in 600 liter wooden barrels. Most wines are a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. The assemblage varies per vintage. Ferrando also produces a monocépage of 100% Grenache, this is the Colombis cuvée. The production of this wine is scarce, there are only 550 cases available per year.
Isabel's wines are powerful with lots of fruit aromas and spiciness. The wines are ready to drink after about 2 to 3 years and have an aging potential of 10 to 20 years. The best vintages of Domaine Ferrando are: 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
