Violets and fresh black raspberry on the nose of Serafin’s 2008 Chambolle-Musigny Les Baudes are enticing, but its palate performance is firm and tart, although by no means insubstantial. Strongly cyanic and stony notes as well as a tart “memory” of malic acid lend a certain austerity to the finish, which however cannot be faulted on sheer persistence. There is palpably high extract as well as a stimulating sense of energy here – as tasted from cask – and perhaps the wine will be capable of achieving greater harmony and generosity in 4-5 more years. Serafin suggests, reasonably, that some of the brash berryish character on exhibit here is a function of terroir, as witness both the proximity to Bonnes Mares and the similarity in vinous personality.
