Tasted at the chateau, you are immediately struck by the smokiness of the nose: cooked meats, a touch of burnt buttered toast just explodes from the glass. The palate is full-bodied with an over-riding meatiness to it, lovely balance, fleshy as one expects from an ’85, but married to Grand-Puy-Lacoste’s inherent austerity this makes for a “complete” wine experience. Savoury black fruits on the well-poised finish that just lacks the length of the ’90. But still a lovely wine.

Burly wine. Deep and dark-colored with an iron backbone of tannins. Plenty of licorice and fruit character.

Rene Gabriel (18)

Rene Gabriel: 17: Sehr dunkles Weinrot, dicht in der Mitte. Reduktives Bouquet. TCA-Spuren, Fleischparüren, braucht Luft, zeigt aber eine tiefgründige Aromatik. Im Gaumen viel besser als von der Nase her erwartet, fleischiges Extrakt, sanfte Bitternote, gehört, vom ersten Ansatz her, zur alten Machart. Ein Klassiker mit einem grosszügigen Verlangen nach Toleranz. Zwei Stunden dekantieren. Problemlos noch 20 Jahre zu geniessen. Die hohe Note mag Anwesende dieser Probe erstaunen. Ich habe den Wein ein paar Mal von einem Glas zum anderen umgeschüttet. Dabei absorbierte er den anfänglichen, reduktiven Fehlton. Also auf alle Fälle lange dekantieren.
